# Find out which jobs actually make me money

A prompt file from MediaMentorAI's Daily AI Move series.
Tutorial and live demo: https://mediamentorai.com/ai-tutorials/job-profit-dashboard-with-claude

## How to use this file

1. Export or copy your last 3 months of jobs from your scheduling or invoicing app, or a spreadsheet. For each job you need: the date, the type of job, what you charged, hours on site, hours driving, and materials.
2. Open a new chat in Claude. ChatGPT can follow this file too, but we made the tutorial in Claude.
3. Upload this file, or copy everything from "Instructions for the AI" down and paste it into the chat. Then paste your jobs when it asks.
4. Check the numbers on two or three jobs by hand before you act on them.

You don't need to know how to code or write formulas.

## Instructions for the AI

You are helping a small business owner find out which kinds of jobs actually make them money once materials and their time, including drive time, are counted. The owner is busy and is not technical. Use plain words and keep every message short.

### Step 1: Ask me what you need

Ask me these, two or three at a time, and skip anything I've already told you:

1. What does my business do?
2. What is my time worth per hour? (What I pay myself, or what I'd pay someone to do the work.)
3. Do I want to count drive time? (Yes, unless I say otherwise.)
4. Are there costs per job that aren't in my log, like a disposal fee or a helper?

Then ask me to paste my job log: one job per line with date, job type, charged, hours on site, drive hours and materials. A header row is fine, and so is a paste straight from a spreadsheet.

### Step 2: Check the data

Tell me how many jobs and job types you found. Point out anything that looks off: missing numbers, job types spelled two ways, a job with zero hours. Ask me to confirm before you build.

### Step 3: Build the dashboard

Build it as one self-contained web page:

- One HTML file with the CSS and JavaScript inside it. No AI, accounts, internet connection or outside services.
- My hourly rate in an input I can change, with everything updating as I type.
- Take-home per hour for each job type: (charged minus materials) divided by (hours on site plus drive hours). Show it as bars with my hourly rate as a line, green past the line and red short of it.
- A table by job type: jobs, average charge, average materials, average hours, take-home per hour, profit per hour above my rate, and total profit.
- My five best and five worst individual jobs by take-home per hour.
- Plain advice: what to do more of, what to reprice or drop (with the price that would break even at my rate), and where drive time is eating the profit.
- A box to paste a new job log later, an "Analyze this log" button and a "Load sample log" button that brings back this log.
- Make every button work with a click handler, not a form submit, so it also works inside a chat preview.
- Works on a phone, and with a keyboard and a screen reader.

Check your math on at least two job types before you show it to me. Show it to me here first. Don't publish it or share it.

### Step 4: Explain it

Give me the headline numbers in a few sentences: overall take-home per hour, the best and worst job types, and the one change that would help most. If I ask for changes, update the dashboard and tell me what changed.

## Example (the handyman demo)

This is the message used in the tutorial. The handyman and all 40 jobs are made up.

> I'm a handyman. Below is my job log from the last 3 months.
>
> Show me which kinds of jobs actually make me money after materials and drive time, if my time is worth $45 an hour.
> Build it as a dashboard: profit per hour for each job type, my best and worst jobs, and what I should do more of.
> Let me paste a new job log later, with a button that loads this one as a sample.
> It has to work without AI or the internet.
> Show it to me here first. Don't publish it yet.

What Claude found: deck staining takes home $94.61 an hour and is the best; furniture assembly takes home $37.24 an hour, the only job type under $45, and lost $166 against that rate (it would need about $137 a job, roughly 21% more, to break even); 41% of small-repair hours are driving.
